The city of Portland has released crime statistics for 2023.

The following is a quick summary.

First, the stats say that the number of crimes in both Portland at large and in Bridlemile decreased in 2023 compared to 2022. They were roughly unchanged from their 2016-to-2023 averages.

Specifically, In Portland, the total number of crime incidents fell to 63,790 from 2022’s 71,858. The 8-year average (2016 to 2023) was 62,681.

In Bridlemile, the number of offenses fell to 112 from 2022’s 150. The 8-year average (2016 to 2023) was also 112.

Second, the stats say that the overall 2023 per-capita crime rate in Bridlemile remained at about 1/5th of that in Portland at large.

Specifically, in 2023 PDX reported 63,790 incidents for 652,503 residents (2020 census). That was 9.78%. The 2022 average was 11.01% and the 2016-2023 average was 9.61%.  

Meanwhile, B’mile had 112 incidents for 5,904 residents (2020 census). That was 1.9% based. The 2022 average was 2.54% and the 2016-2023 average was also 1.9%.

Digging deeper, the biggest Bridlemile drop in 2023 versus 2016 to 2022 was in larceny offenses.  These fell to 20 in 2023 versus 55 in 2022 and versus an 8-year average of 39.5. Larceny is theft of personal property that does not use force (robbery) or sneaking / breaking in (burglary). Instead, it is theft like pick-pocketing, purse-snatching, shoplifting, and theft from motor vehicles.
